The insights of the Zurko Research’s dermatologist

2 April 2024

In the world of beauty and personal care, the safety of cosmetics is a crucial topic that concerns both the consumers and dermatologists.

As a dermatologist,

“I aim to shed light on a critical aspect: cosmetic tolerance testing. In the pursuit of beauty and skincare, recognizing that not all products are suitable for all skin type is imperative. For this reason, tolerance testing plays a vital role in evaluating the clinical safety and efficacy of cosmetic products.

These studies involve subjecting cosmetic products to rigorous clinical evaluations under medical – dermatological supervision before their release onto the market. These tests may include repeated application of the cosmetic product to the skin to observe any potential adverse reactions over a specified period of time. Additionally, patch-tests are performed where the product is applied to small areas of the skin and any reactions are monitored.

In my clinical experience and practice, I’ve witnessed first hand the importance of these tests. Many patients come to the clinic with skin concerns, ranging from mild irritations to severe allergic reactions, caused by the use of inappropriate cosmetic products.

It is essential to understand that the skin is a dynamic and highly individualized organ. What works for one person may not be suitable for another. Therefore, it is important to note that tolerance tests not only evaluate the overall safety of the product but also its compatibility with different skin types, including sensitive and allergy-prone skin.

In my practice, I always advise my patients to choose products that have undergone dermatological tolerance testing. These products are not only safer but also less likely to cause skin irritations or adverse reactions. Additionally, by opting for dermatologically tested products, consumers can have the confidence that they are using products backed by scientific evidence.

I recommended everyone to prioritize the safety and health of their skin when selecting cosmetic products. In this sense, tolerance testing is a fundamental tool to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the products that we use or want to incorporate into our skincare routine.”
