Since its founding in 1999, WENEOS has established itself as a vital center of expertise in sun protection evaluation for cosmetics. Our mission is to ensure the safety and effectiveness of sun care products introduced to the market.
In October 2024, a major milestone marked our growth with the relocation of our headquarters to a larger, more modern space, designed to meet our clients’ expanding needs and to enhance our service offerings, especially with the launch of our new testing services.
As a pioneer in in vitro sun protection testing, our expertise contributes to the development of global standards and methods. Over 20% of our activities are dedicated to research and innovation, ensuring continuous improvement in testing methods. Traceability and quality are the company’s unwavering commitments. Our primary goal is to bring our scientific expertise— developed and recognized over years of practice—to serve our clients’ needs.
In recent years, WENEOS has developed numerous testing methods and new technologies (such as robotic spreading, reproducible sandblasted substrates, etc.) aimed at improving the reproducibility and reliability of sun protection evaluation tests. Over the past two years, our R&D studies have also allowed us to offer innovative in vitro methods in our laboratory, such as long UVA protection, sweat resistance, and immediate protection testing.
To meet growing demand and diversify our activities, we relocated in October 2024 to a new facility in Compiègne. This change represents not only a logistical improvement but also reflects our commitment to innovation in sun protection and expanding our capacity to support new projects.
Our new facilities include spacious laboratories equipped with the latest innovations to meet international standards. This new location also aligns with our commitment to sustainable development and environmental preservation, as the nearly 800-square-meter building complies with the 2020 Environmental Regulation (RE2020).
Historically, in vivo testing protocols, such as those described in ISO 24444 standards or FDA guidelines, are used to measure the effectiveness of sun protection products. These methods involve exposing skin to UV rays to elicit a skin reaction (erythema). This helps determine the minimum UV doses needed to produce a reaction on both protected and unprotected skin.Starting in
January 2025, WENEOS is launching an innovative new testing method to evaluate photoprotection in products according to the ISO/FDIS 23698 standard: Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (HDRS). This method enables clinical testing to evaluate SPF, UVA Protection Factor (UVA-PF), and Critical Wavelength (CW) without inducing erythematous and/or pigmented skin reactions. This marks a significant ethical advancement in sun protection testing.
For years, WENEOS has been committed to alternative methods, dedicated to offering highquality services in full compliance with current standards. We are proud to offer, within our laboratory, methods aligned with the upcoming ISO/FDIS 23675 for in vitro SPF evaluation and ISO/FDIS 23698 for HDRS evaluation, placing both science and ethics at the heart of sun protection testing practices.
Our latest developments highlight our commitment to a responsible and transparent cosmetics industry. At WENEOS, we strongly believe in the importance of effective, high-quality sun protection, essential for consumer health and well-being. With our expertise and advanced technologies, we help brands address the challenges of sun protection safety and efficacy by providing reliable, repeatable, and reproducible methods.
WENEOS aims to be more than a service provider—we are a trusted partner, dedicated to innovation and continuous improvement in our methods and services. With our expanded offerings and upgraded facilities, we are now better equipped than ever to support our clients in building a future where sun protection for cosmetics is both high-performing, safe, and aligned with the ever-evolving demands of the industry.
