CIDP’s Approach to Assessment of Products in Restoring Skin Surface Barrier Function via ZOOM #30

23 April 2024

Evaluating the barrier function entails examining the skin’s ability to retain moisture and defend against environmental stressors including but not limited to, measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin pH, skin hydration levels, sebum production etc. Serums and moisturizers are known to restore the barrier function to a great extent. But of the plenty of cosmeceuticals available, which one to use?

At CIDP, a highly trained team conducts studies to visually assess the impact of a product coupled with instrumental evaluation wherein a significant decrease in TEWL using Tewameter or an improvement in skin hydration using Corneometer after product application and Corneometer reading after minimally invasive tape-stripping indicating product penetration can substantiate the efficacy of these products. These studies can be coupled with skin imaging and dermatological assessments to measure various signs of inflammation or damage.
