Although the skin microbiome has been studied extensively in dermatological and cosmetic research, there is still no consensus on its ideal composition. Influenced by numerous intrinsic and external factors, it comprises a wide variety of microorganisms. While many skin disorders are associated with shifts toward potentially harmful organisms, microbiome-focused cosmetics are primarily tested to ensure they do not disrupt or reduce microbial diversity. A healthy microbiome supports healthy skin—and healthy skin features a healthy microbiome. Established methods can objectively assess key indicators of skin health, including hydration (Corneometer®), sebum (Sebumeter®), TEWL (Tewameter®), pH, gloss, topography (Visioscan®), elasticity (Cutometer®), bacterial activity (Visiopor®) and redness (Mexameter®).
