Solving industry challenges: Summit attendees invited to be part of the conversation

All new roundtables at this year’s in-cosmetics Formulation Summit 2022 will invite attendees to discuss sustainability and the future of the personal care industry

With sustainability and the benefits of collaboration high on the agenda, attendees at this year’s in-cosmetics Formulation Summit are invited to take part in the conversation in a series of eight all-new problem-solving, roundtable discussions.

Running on the second day of this year’s Summit, which returns to London from 25-26 October 2022, eight roundtables will enable attendees to share their insights and experiences to help further the discussion on a range of vitally important themes. Returning after their day one presentations, a series of industry leaders will head up the engaging roundtables helping to explore their topics of choice in more detail.

Among them, Konstantinos Gardikis, R&D Director at APIVITA, will invite attendees to discuss how to approach sustainability as a brand. He will use his 40 years’ experience to challenge attendees to think about the importance of a holistic operational mindset that spans all industrial levels, from raw material choice and processes to innovation and decision-making.

Dr. Barbara Olioso, Managing Director of The Green Chemist Consultancy and moderator of the 2022 in-cosmetics Formulation Summit, will head up a discussion around cosmetic preservation with green chemistry. Barbara, who matches her scientific rigour with a real passion for modern green chemistry ingredients and traditional botanicals, has more than 20 years’ experience as a cosmetic formulator and chemist developing natural and organic cosmetics and bespoke plant extracts.

Fellow sustainability advocate, Jonathan Wragg, Group Sustainability Director at The Blue Ocean Programme, will address sustainable packaging best practice. Over the span of his career, Jonathan has gained a global reputation for helping to eliminate greenwashing, working alongside global brands to offer invaluable advice and insights.

Elsewhere, a discussion on microbiome and skin health will put current limitations and new approaches to substantiating microbiota-related cosmetic claims up for debate, while the future of skincare nutrition away from dietary supplements and functional foods will welcome Professor Sonia Laneri, Head of R&D for Cosmetic Products Efficacy Evaluation & New Cosmetic Claim Protocols, and Dr. Ritamaria Di Lorenzo, Ph.D., R&D Manager for R&D Cosmetics Laboratory of the University of Naples Federico II, to moderate this insightful session.

Fellow scholar, Francis McGlone, from the School of Natural Sciences & Psychology at Liverpool JM University, will lead a discussion on neuro-cosmetics approaches in the development of products, with a focus on skin sensitivity and aging, and the creation of new sensorialities. As the Head of Somatosensory & Affective Neuroscience Group, Francis’ primary area of academic research is characterising the role of afferent c-fibres in humans, investigating their role in pain, itch, and pleasure. He was awarded the Ig Nobel Peace Prize for his work on ‘the pleasurability of scratching an itch: A psychological and topographical assessment’.

In the final pair of sessions, Olivia Jezler, Founder of Future of Smell and leading scent expert for both product and experience innovation, will lead participants through emotional design in cosmetics, and the influence of aromachology, colour psychology and texture. While Becci Vallis, a freelance Journalist in the healthy, beauty and wellness sector, will take on beauty in the metaverse, helping to unpack best practices for brands looking to make a splash in the virtual world.

Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director of in-cosmetics Formulation Summit, said: “The introduction of our new series of topical roundtables is designed to put Summit delegates at the forefront of the discussion. By joining, we hope it helps them take the next step in extending their understanding of key industry topics, and more importantly insights into how to implement the trends discussed as part of this year’s programme. We look forward to welcoming attendees to take part and create an engaging and vibrant learning experience.”
