Abstract of the webinar – Literal synthesis

First, we would like to thank the clinical evaluation managers who answered the survey on their ways they conduct their studies and the testing laboratories that have answered to the survey dedicated to them.

Table of content

First, we will see the context of the study, following with the beauty market evolution. Then see the expectations of the clinical evaluation managers. We will give an overview of the clinical testing methods with the activity of the testing laboratories. To finish, we will detail the trends of the clinical testing market.

Context of the study

We wanted to bring a unique and global panorama on the current drivers of a specific but global market about the clinical testing. This concerns skin, hair, scalp and nail about efficacy, safety & tolerance, consumer tests and the sensory analysis.

We conducted two surveys:

  • one dedicated to clinical testing managers of actives manufacturers and cosmetic brands
  • one for the Clinical Testing laboratories.

Beauty Market

The beauty market represents a total of 228 billion€ in 2021.

But the Covid-19 had a global impact on this market, where Asia, the leader lost some market share (to Europe). We can observe a dynamic but resilient market as after the big drop in 2020, it bounced well in 2021.

Trends of this market

Let’s now see the 4 trends of this market.

The first one is the cultural evolution, the second on is the sustainability and social responsibility for the customers. There is a big topic concerning the industry on formulation and regulation. Finally, there is the environmental and life-style changes. The golden category in the beauty industry is the skin care.

Demand and expectations by the clinical evaluation experts.

Among the 82 respondents, 47 of them were French and 35 were English speakers. They were mainly R&D or evaluation. Coming from cosmetics or active brands or also, from a white -label provider.

Most of the respondent work with five or more testing laboratories to conduct their tests. Mainly implemented in France, Europe but also in North America and China for about 30%.

The best criteria for the laboratory selection is the expertise.

For the sourcing of the new testing laboratories, clinical expert managers mainly use their business contact, but also the Skinobs platforms or read scientific reviews to find a testing lab.

They will select their CRO based on several criteria.

Firstly, the claim they can test, their cost, their devices but also the tested type of subject.

The top 3 claims where experts spend the most time looking for a test is:

  • anti-aging,
  • the moisturizing,
  • sensitive skin claims.

Skinobs insights

Among the 82 experts that answered the survey, 88% find the Skinobs platforms very useful while 86% of them read the Skinobs News feed.

The French respondent are mainly happy with the list of methods and the detailed method description they can find on the platform. The English respondent are happy with the possibility of finding new testing laboratories and new technologies on Skinobs.

Panorama of the clinical tests worldwide

We will share with you the clinical expertise dedicated to the beauty industry (source: Skinobs).

Europe is the major test partner, with 50% of the global distribution on its soil. We can note that a major part of the Testing laboratories owns one center, whereas only 3% of them have more than five centers.

About the measurement devices, Europe is also the leader as we can count 66 companies on the continent.

Methods by test category

There are only 25 tolerance methods because it is mainly standardized ones. It is the same for the consumer testing and sensory analysis with 5 and 9 methods. There was a big development on the biometrological tests in nail, skin, hair during the last 15 years which explains this number of methods. To finish, we have the hair care methods on strands that are becoming more democratic now.

We can note that for middle/low innovative so for classical methods almost all Testing laboratories are able to implement studies while for high tech and very high-tech methods, the number of methods is lower as the number of CRO capable to answer these services.

Hair care represents the highest number of CRO doing these tests because we gathered all the claims linked to hair care. About the hair care testing, there is a specific know how with innovative testing. For few years it has represented an increase of the offer. We can note that skin hydration or facial biometrological properties and wrinkle are also high.

Estimation of the global clinical testing market: 707 million€.

It doesn’t concern the academic research lab neither the hospital research testing laboratories nor the internal testing laboratories of cosmetic brands.

The results are estimations made through a sample of more than 140 testing laboratories (out of the 240 estimate ones worldwide) of different sizes and countries of origin.

These 707 million euros are spread mainly in small turnover companies.

Most of the testing laboratories are composed of less than 10 employees (46%). We are on a mature market as most of the testing laboratories were created between 1990 and 2010.

Trends of the clinical testing market

Two main trends drive the sector.

  • The first one is the importance of the proof and evidence of the claims. The main reason is the regulation that obliges all beauty companies to demonstrate the tolerance and substantiate all the claim of the product that are launched.
  • The second trend is linked to the technology environment with the imaging of AI evolution and the need of nomad tests. Also, the second main reason is the highly competitive sector of the beauty industry.

Conclusion

To end this presentation, we can say that we saw a large and rich expertise of the clinical testing market with a worldwide know how dominated by the European leadership.
