Goya Innova – The skin as an ecosystem: new strategies for modulating the skin microbiome via ZOOM#36

The skin microbiome is a functional ecosystem essential for homeostasis, barrier function, immune regulation, and resilience against the exposome. Advances in sequencing, metagenomics, and metabolomics are improving our understanding of its interactions with cosmetics, inflammation, and aging. Innovation is increasingly focused on prebiotics, postbiotics, and microbial metabolites capable of selectively modulating the ecosystem without introducing live microorganisms. Clinically, the objective is to preserve microbial diversity, physiological pH, barrier integrity, and skin tolerance. In the absence of a specific global regulatory framework, successful strategies must integrate scientific evidence, safety, appropriate cosmetic claims, and differentiation, driving effective, sustainable, responsible, and scientifically supported microbiome-friendly cosmetics worldwide.
