AI Technology: Current and Future Applications in Cosmetics via Cosmetics & Toiletries

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be defined as the theory and development of computer programs that can do tasks and solve problems that usually require human intelligence. These include visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and word translation.1 There are many different subcategories of AI although they may be defined differently from field-to-field and depending on different uses. Example subclasses of AI are: machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, cognitive computing, computer vision and natural language processing (for additional information, see Page 7).

Machine learning uses neural networks to comb through data to find insights and patterns. It can choose what to track within the data without specific programming, and increases its intelligence over time by repeatedly reviewing data. Neural networks are programmed like the neural network of the brain—highly complicated and intricate; although they cannot fully replicate the brain.
