Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry for Metals Analyse by Expertox

Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, also called Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (EAAS), is based on the absorption of photons.

The device consists of a source (hollow cathode lamp), an atomizer (graphite furnace), a wavelength selection device (monochromator), a detector (photomultiplier) and a acquisition device [1].

Principle of the analysis

A drop of solution (10μL) is introduced to graphite tube center contained in the furnace.
First, sample is dried at 100-150 ° C to remove water, then pyrolysis remove volatiles from the matrix.
The main characteristic of SAAET is to use an electric heater.
The atomization is obtained inside the electrically heated graphite furnace in which the analyte is
converted into gaseous atoms which absorb the radiation allowing the analytical measurement. The absorbed radiation is emitted by a hollow cathode lamp specific to the element, the energy of which will then be absorbed by the latter [2].

Usually it’s an single-element technique but today the most powerful instruments have a simultaneous multi-element capacity of six analytes.
