Recent metagenomic studies have demonstrated that the overall functional potential of the microbiome is rather conserved between healthy individuals.
A new study(1), in the intestinal tract, another microbiota, assess the biological processes undertaken in-vivo by microbes and the host by conducting a metaproteome analysis, as proteomics can reach the really impacted functions.
By analysing the proteins from samples of 16 healthy individuals at three measurement time points, half receiving a probiotic and half a placebo, the obtained metaproteome was found to contain a functional core but also to show variation across individuals and with time. The study could also show the human-bacterial interactions and the activity of specific microbial groups, by crossing 16S rDNA and metaproteomics informations.
It indicates that with a stable proportion of main functionalities, there is a “healthy balance”, e.g. in protein turnover and replication, in the intestinal ecosystem.
This kind of approach is the way to understand what are at molecular level the impact of a cosmetic or a probiotic on skin and microbiome functions together, and to claim on the healthy balance of skin and its microbiota functions.
