Skin problems aggravate the lives, work, and confidence of much of the population, not knowing what the future will bring. What doctors see by eye or by magnifier doesn’t tell the whole story about the most common skin diseases. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the developed world, affecting 1 in 5 people. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer (75% to 80%). BCC occurs mostly in the head and neck region (70-80%), where treatment has a major effect on cosmetic appearance.
Early skin cancer detection can reduce mortality rates, and proper treatment of those cases affects treatment time, recurrence, cost, and general outlook. Accurate detection of tumor boundaries for BCC conservative surgery (overwhelmingly the treatment of choice) reduces the 10% recurrence rate by over threefold. Our motivation is to aid physicians in treatment planning, so that they only need to cut once (less recurrence) and only as much as needed (less damage).
