StratiCELL, gene expression changes after Cutibacterium Acnes Infection

Wearing protective masks is still impacting our skin health. Reducing inflammatory acne induced by Cutibacterium acnes remains a primary target to fight maskne. To support its customers in defining the efficacy of innovative ingredients, StratiCELL is continuously increasing its panel of anti-inflammatory in vitro assays.

In its MicroBIOS Platform, StratiCELL colonizes 3D reconstructed human epidermis with living phylotype IA1 acne strain. To gain insight on this model, StratiCELL sought to define the total epidermal gene expression profile of the epidermis under the influence of C. acnes.

Using a whole genome transcriptomic microarrays analysis combined to its proprietary Skin Knowledge Database, StratiCELL identified the influence of C. acnes on the expression of 15 key biomarkers of inflammation, innate immunity and barrier integrity.

Today, StratiCELL objectivates the efficacy of dermo-cosmetic active to reduce inflammatory acne condition by monitoring the level of expression of those genes in the context of infected reconstructed epidermis. The Belgian CRO is also currently validating protein quantification assays to extend its panel of anti-acne efficacy tests.
