Skin is a formidable physical barrier whose function is to protect our body and act as a connection with the outside.

However, today we know that the skin is much more than a large layer composed of our own cells; the skin is a complete ecosystem in which countless microorganisms coexist and which is usually defi ned as a microbiome.

The diversity of this is related to several factors, such as genetic predisposition, lifestyle and demographic and

environmental characteristics of the human.

Creams, hygiene products, makeup and cosmetics in general can influence the composition of the microbiome causing imbalances and even alterations that can cause problems such as psoriasis, acne, rosacea or atopic dermatitis.

But are there cosmetic products that respect the skin, to the point of not altering the microbiome or even favoring it?

The answer is yes. Cosmetic research is making huge strides in this direction and cosmetic claims related to the microbiome are becoming more frequent and innovative.

If microbiome protection is a big challenge for the cosmetics industry, it is also a challenge for evaluation.
