Examination of dry skin by proderm

1 February 2022

In cooperation with Bayer Consumer Care AG and Bayer Healthcare SAS we have published the articles ‘Biophysical and Subject-Based Assessment of the Effects of Topical Moisturizer Usage on Xerotic Skin

  • Part I: Epsilon® 2D Skin Hydration’ and ‘Biophysical and Subject-Based Assessment of the Effects of Topical Moisturizer Usage on Xerotic Skin
  • Part II: Visioscan® VC 20plus Imaging’ in the online journal ‘cosmetics’ in December 2021.

Background:

As new biophysical methods become available to the skin researcher it is important to understand the type of information that they are capable of measuring, and how it relates to consumer perception of topical moisturizing products.

The aim of the work presented here was to understand what dry skin imaging can reveal about the skin and subject feedback from the use of a topical moisturizing product and how it relates to the consumer usage experience of a topical product.

In the study conducted at proderm, a skin moisturising product was applied over a period of 3 weeks. The test area was analysed with the imaging methods Epsilon TM 2D and Visioscan® VC 20 plus and the subjective evaluation of the test persons was documented in parallel.

With the help of the two imaging methods, it could be shown that the application of the product led to an improvement in dry skin. Subject feedback provided confirmatory and complementary information to the biophysical results. Both approaches provide meaningful data for the evaluation of topical products. The subjective survey proved to be suitable to better understand the instrumental results.
