Biox Epsilon™ is a novel touch-sensitive imaging device that characterises static and dynamic properties of skin, including Stratum Corneum hydration, hydration heterogeneity and micro-relief. The Epsilon™ yields real-time imaging, graphical and numerical information and is adaptable for both in vivo and in vitro applications.
Rather than using an arbitrary scale, the Epsilon™ uniquely has a linearly calibrated response, whereby every image pixel produces an accurate and reproducible dielectric permittivity measurement. The calibrated scale has a relative permittivity range of 1 for air, up to 85 for sweat, which can be interpreted in terms of hydration. Skin dielectric permittivity relates to water content because the permittivity (ε = 80.1) of pure water is much higher than that of other skin constituents.
However accurate the device, errors associated with contact obstructions such as hair or peripheral gaps between sensor and skin, or skin surface water, are common. Such errors can be eliminated during post-measurement image analysis. This presentation shows the power of the ε-filter, an Epsilon™ software tool with the ability to correct for (1) imperfect contact with the sensor and (2) skin surface water, leading to significantly improved measurement accuracy and repeatability.
