Multi-ethnic Approach to Assessing the Skin Function Barrier by IEC

The skin constitutes the interface between the organism and the external environment to ensure a mission of protection by forming a true barrier.

This cutaneous barrier is largely ensured by the most superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis, which plays at the same time a role of

  • hydric barrier: intercorneocyte lipids, Natural Moisturizing Factor],
  • physical barrier [cornea, desmosomes offer a mechanical resistance],
  • antioxidant [action against oxidative stress],
  • photo-protective [melanogenesis limits the penetration of UV rays] but also
  • anti-microbial barrier [pH, antimicrobial peptides favour the commensal microflora].

IEC offers the possibility to evaluate the skin barrier function using direct or indirect measurements (corneometer, tewameter, sebum meter, pH meter, C-Cube) and/or by following biochemical tests [TG, squalene, ceramide, NMFs, Microbiota] performed on non-invasive samples [QIMA Synelvia – Life Sciences].

In order to demonstrate the effects and the dermo-cosmetic properties with soothing and repairing aims, the cutaneous barrier can be artificially attacked by chemical process [Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in occlusive] or mechanical action [successive strippings] which consists in progressively detaching the stratum corneum. These effects can be evaluated during a kinetic or more frequently during an In Use Test.

For a global multi-ethnic approach, these tests can be performed in their 8 test centers in France, Bulgaria, South Africa and Asia (Japan, Singapore, Korea and China).
