PEAUrigami is an artistic reinterpretation of skin biology through origami, a Japanese art with scientific basis (origami – from oru, “to fold”, and kami, “paper”). Skin and Origami are similar in several respects: the polygonal network, the basic folds, pleat folding and the polygonal shapes.
Hence, the idea of producing artwork connecting the skin with the art of origami to pay an artistic tribute to the skin. Our artistic and cultural endeavor has an educational purpose; it seeks to communicate knowledge of the physiology of the skin to different audiences (initiates, dermatologists and scientists and general public) by using the technique of origami. We firstly took photographs of different skins, with different magnifications, which were developed on different-sized squares of paper in order to make folded structures in accordance with a selection of origami models. With skin physiology being reinterpreted through origami in this way, we logically called this educational-artistic exhibition “PEAUrigami®” associating the French word “peau” (skin) and “origami”. This artistic approach was the subject of 4 scientific publications and communications at ESDR and EADV.
PEAUrigami exhibition at ESDR 2022, Amsterdam
During the lastest European Society of Dermatology Research congress in Amsterdam, there were 2 PEAUrigami educational-artistic exhibitions :
PEAUrigami skin cells workshop
Finally, the delegates were invited to “fold a skin cell” according to their research topic : melanocyte, fibroblast, keratinocyte, adipocyte or lymphocyte. Another way to experiment skin biology !
