In cosmetic formulation it is essential to have a clear understanding of the pathway of an appearance change induced by an applied product. However, as the characteristics of the skin of human individuals are different, the cosmetic effect can manifest itself in different ways and in different extends. Conventional instrumental skin evaluation methods lack the sensitivity and discriminatory power to assess the subtle appearance changes which can be observed by well-trained experts. On the other hand, the evaluations performed by experts are often criticised because of the lack of objectivity and the contestability of the scientific rational. New digital evaluation technologies will bridge this gap and will help formulators, efficacy testing experts and persons responsible for the scientific communication.
