We are in a pivotal moment for the future of biomedical research. As policymakers shape the next Horizon Europe Framework Programme (2028–2034) and advance the proposed EU Biotech Act, there is a critical question that must be addressed. Will Europe bolster its support for animal-free science and establish a coordinated, long-term strategy capable of unlocking the full scientific, societal, and economic potential of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)?
This question was at the heart of a roundtable organised at the European Parliament by Humane World for Animals and co-hosted by Members of the European Parliament Cristina Guarda and Sebastian Everding in June 2026. Bringing together experts from research, industry, regulatory science, government and innovation policy circles, the discussion highlighted a new consensus: NAMs are no longer niche alternatives to animal testing. They are emerging as a cornerstone of a more predictive, efficient, and human-relevant research ecosystem.
