As the global microbiome market accelerates, French deeptech startup Byome Labs is redefining cosmeti personalization with the world’s first instant, on-site skin microbiome measurement solution. Founded in late 2023, the company combines cutting-edge science, AI and retail-ready technology to bring evidence-based personalization directly to the point of sale.
Byome Labs recently announced a €3.6 million seed funding round, led by Remora Biotech, Paris Business Angels, Angels Santé and strategic business angels. This financing supports the industrialization of Byome Derma, a simple, ultra-fast skin test that enables skincare recommendations based on each individual’s unique microbiome.
Byome Labs was co-founded by David Suissa (CEO), Stéphanie Badel-Berchoux (Laboratory Director) and Margaux Jeanmougin (Marketing & Communications Director), bringing together complementary expertise in microbiology, industrial R&D and market-driven innovation.
“Scientific innovation only matters if it can be deployed at scale and used in real-life conditions. This funding allows us to industrialize Byome Derma and offer brands a new standard for instant, biology-driven skincare recommendations,” said David Suissa, Founder & CEO.
A disruptive technology in a saturated and fast-growing market
Consumers today face thousands of skincare references without objective tools to determine what truly suits their skin. In a global microbiome market forecast to grow 22% annually and reach $3.5 billion by 2030 (Global Market Insights, 2024), no existing solution has yet enabled instant microbiome measurement directly at the point of sale.
Byome Derma changes the paradigm by enabling:
- Skin microbiome sampling and analysis in under two minutes, on-site or at home,
- Microbial diversity measurement using antigenic strips, similar to COVID rapid tests,
- Product recommendations powered by AI trained with dermatologists,
- A non-invasive, device-free, scalable and cost-efficient solution.
A strategic lever for cosmetic and dermo-cosmetic brands Byome Derma addresses both mass-market brands seeking to democratize personalization and premium and dermo-cosmetic brands focused on service differentiation, loyalty and scientific credibility.
“Today, nearly 40% of skincare products sold are not adapted to the skin of those who purchase them (Journal of Dermatological Science, 2024). This leads to skin imbalance, consumer dissatisfaction and more than $450 billion worth of cosmetics wasted globally each year. Byome Derma introduces evidence-based product selection from the very first step,” added David Suissa.
By integrating Byome Derma at the point of sale, brands can:
- Reduce cosmetic waste by improving product-skin compatibility,
- Elevate retail experience with a high-value scientific service,
- Feed R&D and innovation pipelines with unique microbiome datasets.
From cutting-edge research to on-site customer experience
Founded in late 2023, Byome Labs relies on:
- A state-of-the-art in vitro microbiology laboratory in Clermont-Ferrand,
- An R&D center in Cosmetic Valley (Chartres),
- A multidisciplinary team of 17 experts (microbiology, immunology, genetic engineering, data science,
AI, regulatory and marketing), - A proprietary strain collection including bacteria and yeasts such as Malassezia, studied in both
planktonic and biofilm forms, - An AI-driven platform linking microbiome profiles to product compatibility.
Byome Labs is co-developing Byome Derma with several French and international cosmetic and dermo-cosmetic brands.
An “Intel Inside” model for the future of personalized beauty
Designed as a white-label, on-site solution, Byome Derma integrates seamlessly into retail environments as a brand ecosystems. It provides a scientific alternative to empirical recommendations, questionnaires or trend-based advice, aligning with the industry’s shift toward transparency, sustainability and data-driven personalization.
In parallel, Byome Labs plays an active role in structuring the microbiome ecosystem. Alongside Cosmetic Valley,
the company leads a multi-stakeholder working group to define future standards, best practices and testing
frameworks for microbiome analysis.
Industry recognition and international ambitions
In 2025, Byome Labs received major industry recognition, including
- First Prize at the Cosmetic 360 Awards 2025 (Brand & Retail category),
- Winner of the Trophées des Entreprises du Puy-de-Dôme, « Elles innovent » category.
Building on this momentum, Byome Labs will showcase Byome Derma at CES Las Vegas 2026, positioning the solution as a next-generation beauty tech platform for brands, retailers and non-medical dermatology worldwide.
Next milestones
- Industrial production of the first Byome Derma kits: spring 2025
- International deployment (Europe, U.S., Asia): from 2026
