[INTERVIEW] Michelle Wong – Science Communicator, Author of The Science of Beauty

While browsing Korean online bookstores wondering what new books on cosmetic science had been published, I came across The Science of Beauty (Korean edition titled 뷰티의 과학, Sigma Books). The book is a popular science title that strikes a balance between science and beauty. Reviews on Amazon praise it in many ways: “Michelle explains everything clearly—from basic concepts to complex topics—so even readers without scientific knowledge can understand.” “The beautiful graphics on each page stand out.” “It avoids drowning in excessive jargon while still grounding explanations in scientific fact.” “In an era overflowing with YouTube influencers and advertorial reviews, it feels realistic and honest.” “A textbook example of science communication that translates complex scientific concepts into practical understanding.”

I emailed the author, Michelle Wong. Given that we had never met, I didn’t expect a reply—but she responded warmly and sincerely.

Michelle Wong, author of The Science of Beauty (Korean edition 뷰티의 과학), is a chemistry Ph.D. and science communicator behind “Lab Muffin Beauty Science.” Drawing on her background in science education, she has been explaining cosmetic science to the public in an accessible way since 2011—through her website, YouTube, and social media—while actively correcting misinformation. Her 2024 June publication The Science of Beauty is an extension of this long-standing work.
