Cosmetic surgery tourism is booming as patients travel abroad to lower costs, shorten waiting times and access procedures unavailable in certain markets. But according to a review published in Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery [1], post-operative complications are a cause for concern.
The review analysed 58 studies comprising 1,249 patients who underwent cosmetic procedures abroad and later received treatment for a complication within their local healthcare system. Findings indicated that infection, implant-related complications and wound dehiscence are the most common problems reported following cosmetic surgery treatments both inside and outside of Europe.
